What is Thru Glenn’s Lens: More Than Just a Name

There are lots of ways to define Thru Glenn’s Lens. And not one of them tells you everything.

Yes, it’s a contemporary card and gift shop. Yes, it’s a scholarship for aspiring young high school artists hoping to achieve their dreams. And yes, it’s also the charitable nonprofit that brings it all together – where 100% of our profits go to support our mission and those scholarships.

But that's not the whole story.

If you define it by what we sell, that would be our totally one-of-a-kind cards (and a few other fun curated items), created from his personal original photography and some very real “been-there-felt-that” emotions. To help people connect with each other when they NEED IT MOST. In all the good times and the not-so-good times in this crazy life.

But that would just be the "official stuff." Because at its heart, and in my heart, the name Thru Glenn’s Lens is way more!

It’s a name that comes from over 40 years of knowing the real Glenn. Personally and professionally. The official definitions of the word lens are a start. And though certainly a huge part of it, Thru Glenn’s Lens is more than just his talented eye and seemingly magical camera...

It's the entire way he looked at the world! His adventurous creative spirit! His unique ability to see beauty and intrigue in the everyday, the mundane, and sometimes even the ugly ... and the way he gave everyone in his orbit a chance to see things in a whole new way, too!

Glenn captured the beauty in the beautiful, for sure. And there are plenty of those photos. But he also saw what others didn’t.

He saw something amazing in the ordinary, in everyday patterns, in the unseen. His photos were somehow emotionally evocative, leaving almost no one unmoved when seeing them.

Here are some of my favorite "quirky ones"...

(What's right-side-up? Upside down? Real? At Morro Castle in San Juan, Puerto Rico.)

Broken Fences

(Run-down, broken fences were an irresistible source of pattern & beauty to him.)

Pigeon Close Up

(Imagine a really BIG guy laying down in Venice's St. Mark's Square to give a pigeon his close-up! ... And the pigeon LETTING HIM!)

These "oddball" photos are really important lessons to take away from him:

Find beauty in the everyday, awe in the ordinary,
and get enjoyment out of what seems uneventful.

I learned that from him. It's what helped us get such a kick out of our life together!

And I thank him every single day for leaving me SO MUCH proof of his philosophy and his vision, and for my ability now, to share it with everyone. So you can feel, enjoy, and share in it again...and again.

HE is why Thru Glenn’s Lens is all about CONNECTION, AUTHENTICITY and SUPPORT. Because he was all about those things too. And now I support them in every way I can. If you'd like to know more, it's all here.

Thank you for being interested in everything we're trying to accomplish... and for helping.

Cheers!

Laughter Through the Tears: The Role of Humor in Grief

MAJOR PERSONAL BIAS ACKNOWLEDGED! Laughter is one of my most prized possessions. I love it. I live for it. And I am quite certain, I wouldn’t still be here without it. But humor during sadness is a powerful, often unconscious coping method that can make life better in a whole host of ways. Embrace it. Use it. Enjoy it. It actually may be that best medicine!

Help or Hurt?

Help or Hurt?

(AKA: What to say when someone has died. And what not to.)

 FACT:
There are as many kinds of grief as there are people going through it. So nothing I say here will apply to every person or every death.

But what I can do is share the most common things said that are simply not helpful. Matter of fact, they hurt. Real-life sincere attempts at condolences said to me and to some close friends who have been through a major loss, too, that indeed are NOT helpful.
